The evolution of SEO – Learning to use Hybrid SEO techniques.

Keyword Prominence

Posted on | March 20, 2010 | 3 Comments

Your keyword prominence is simply the placement of your keywords in your content. In seo, it is not only important to use certain keywords in your content but ensuring you have proper keyword prominence.

Typical seo practices will encourage you to include your keywords as often as you can without making your content difficult and un-natural to the reader. This is very true, but solid seo practices should also include the proper placement of those keywords in your sentences and paragraphs.

Seo keyword prominence is placing your keywords close to the beginning of sentences and paragraphs. As with adding your keywords often but retaining the readability of your content, simply placing your keywords at the beginning of your content will not work. Your keyword prominence must fit in your content making sense to the reader and easily flow with the rest of the containing content.

Some seo practices recommend the usage of bulleted lists containing your keywords to further increase your keyword prominence. Of course once again, the list needs to fit with the rest of your content otherwise your seo efforts will be in vain.

A keyword prominent list may look something like the following.

  • Keyword prominence increases your seo value
  • Seo practices include proper keyword prominence
  • Your keyword prominence is the placement of your keywords in your content
  • Using proper keyword prominence is a good seo practice

Clearly the list above does not entirely fit into the rest of this content, but I think you can get the idea of using your keywords in lists to increase your keyword prominence.

In Short

A solid seo practice called keyword prominence is basically placing your keywords near or at the beginning of titles, sentences, and paragraphs including bulleted lists.

Site visibility for Site Optimization

Posted on | March 10, 2010 | 1 Comment

Site visibility for Site Optimization is an important aspect of the Hybrid SEO techniques. On the world wide web everything boils down to traffic and how you can get more of it, especially high quality traffic. Getting traffic to your site is a matter of site visibility. Unfortunately this is also the reason for spam. Spammers love to through trash in your face anywhere and any time they can. They do this because even the scum of the earth knows that without site visibility, they will not get traffic, and without traffic even the best site on the web is doomed.

So how do we increase site visibility without using annoying spam? First we need to know and understand what types of marketing and advertising are effective but not annoying. People respond to things they can relate to and people they trust. The internet is flooded with information and people telling them this and that. If you want your message to stand out you are going to have to break the mold using honesty, integrity, facts, and leave the hype behind. People have heard it all before and they are not looking for yet another person to tell them that you have the answer. Get personal and let them know that you are a real person looking to provide them with real solutions.

Once you have created your very best marketing material that will stand out from all the rest, you need to get it out there where people are going to see it. The internet is one great big interactive newspaper or magazine full of information and people. Certain corners of the internet tend to have more readers than others just like magazines and newspapers. Decide if you are looking for massive un-targeted exposure or moderate exposure that is targeted to your specific audience type.

Use your unique marketing copy to create a fan page on FaceBook. Set up a few information sites that provide useful information but also funnel traffic to your main site. Make use of the many free to use sites that allow free ad postings. Get involved in online communities where you can contribute and at the same time leave your mark. Use freelance services to hire people to build links, traffic, and members to your site. Have some business cards made up and leave them at restaurants you dine at. Post them on business boards. Advertise in print publications.

Once you have created your honest and unique marketing image, get the word out without using spam and others will in turn spread the word when they see you are different. Create an image that can be trusted and marketing your site will get easier with time.

Secondary SO LEGs

Posted on | March 1, 2010 | 2 Comments

If you read the article titled SO LEGs then you know that LEGs is an acronym for Labor Executing Grunts. LEGs are hard working SEO tools that you only have to implement once and they keep on working for a long time. I thought I would follow up that post with a mention about Secondary SO LEGs.

Secondary SO LEGs are less obvious search optimization methods that most people would not normally consider SEO techniques. Maybe you remember reading my post: Your Content is Your Reputation, that will help lead you in the correct direction for this post. Your reputation is considered a secondary SEO tool and having a large respectable reputation would be considered having a Secondary SO LEG.

I understand that some of these methods may seem a bit out in left field for many people, but I assure you that they can dramatically affect your rankings. Do you believe that the search engines hold all the power when it comes to your rankings in the SERPs? They do hold a great deal of power, but the results are dependent on user activity. The internet is made up of webmasters and site visitors each making a mark on the internet landscape building links and writing content. Every click of the mouse is recorded and it can change everything.

Besides, SEO is no longer just ranking in the search engines. We are progressively gravitating to SO, Search or Site Optimization. Traffic originates from every corner of the internet,  sometimes it comes from word of mouth and the visitor has typed your url directly into their address bar.

I know I got a bit off track there, but I want you to understand that even the smallest of things can change the flow of traffic online. This is where your Secondary SO LEGs come in. A Secondary SO LEG can be anything that builds your reputation, name brand, idea, or promotes your link(s). Being an active, knowledgeable, and helpful member of a popular support forum will build your reputation and create Secondary SO LEGs for you.

You could even go so far as to say that being a well known productive member of your offline community would constitute building Secondary SO LEGs. People support what they know and trust. When people know you and trust you, they communicate this to friends, family, and co-workers. All of this communication translates into Secondary SO LEGs.

Doing something positive and worthwhile can add a big boost to your rankings. Remember, traffic comes from everywhere, not just Google.

I understand this post is rather vague and really does not provide any details as how to create Secondary SO LEGs, but that is because your options are virtually endless. Just know that you represent your site and someone is always watching you. Your actions on and offline can bring you massive success or massive failure.

Keyword Optimization For Beginners

Posted on | February 14, 2010 | No Comments

Keyword optimization is a very important part of site optimization and making your site increasingly visible to the public. For beginners in the world of Hybrid SEO, keyword optimization can feel like a never-ending task when you follow popular seo techniques from the past.

If your site is relatively new or even if your site has been online for many years, if your SERP rankings are low and your site authority is low, ranking well for popular search terms will be very difficult. Keyword optimization is how we rank better in the SERPs right? Keyword optimization does play a role in your SERP rankings, but only if you are optimizing correctly.

Search engines rank sites based on two variables, relevance and authority. The relevance of a site is based on how accurately the content including; title tags, header tags, meta tags, anchor tags, and all the keywords match the search being performed. Authority is based on inbound links and the authority those links hold. In short, if your site authority is low, then ranking for popular keywords will be very difficult.

When you begin your keyword optimization, shoot for keywords that have less competition. Now you need to make sure those keywords are still related to your industry, but search for keywords that have less demand. Narrow your topic down until you reach a market that has less competition. Sure, in a smaller market you will have less potential visitors, but you will also have a greater chance of ranking well in the SERPs for the search terms you have selected.

Once you begin to grow your site and increase your site authority, you can begin to compete for the more popular keywords. Search and site optimization is a full-time battle that requires knowledge, skills, patience, and perseverance.

When you optimize your site for keywords, be realistic about your competition and find a piece of the market you can claim for your own. Once you have staked your claim, you can then begin to think about expanding your territory.

Optimizing Dynamic Content

Posted on | February 7, 2010 | 3 Comments

With the increasing popularity of websites using dynamically generated content through the use of various scripts, the issue of optimizing those sites has become a bitter sweet battle. Dynamically generated content makes for some powerful and useful sites, but raises some serious concerns when it comes to optimizing those sites for search.

Recently I had a special script installed on LocalOddJob.com. I had been looking for the perfect script for a couple of years now and had gone through a few before I found this most recent one. The reviews were good and the site demo looked and felt like what I was looking for. Little did I know that 98% of the site would be dynamically generated content as well as the urls. I just took it for granted that the developers would have optimized the script due to the fact this script is a premium script built by professionals.

Now, the developers perform regular updates to the script fixing bugs and making upgrades, but the urls and content are still dynamically generated which leaves me with the task of trying to optimize this site with what little skills I have.

RankforSales has some useful information on the matter. Now I know I need to get my urls fixed, but until that happens I believe using some of their information could be useful.

Such as:
Creating static pages with the dynamic url links in them. Using the static pages to submit to the search engines will create somewhat of an authority vote for the dynamic links suggesting that the search engines crawl and possibly even index the dynamic pages.

Creating a solid xml sitemap with all the urls will also help the crawling and/or indexing process. Basically, without quality indexable content and search engine friendly urls getting a completely dynamic site with dynamic urls crawled and indexed is very difficult.

If having search engine friendly urls is not a current possibility the main focus should be on getting backlinks. My main concern is what happens in the future if I can get the dynamic urls to be rewritten into friendly urls, will all my backlinks become dead links pointing to urls that no longer exist?

As you can see rather than providing you with solutions on this situation I really only have my own inexperience to offer. For the sake of LocalOddJob.com I can only hope that the developers get busy real soon with providing the mod_rewrite for my urls while I work on content and links.
